Native to China, Korea, and Japan, the Trident Maple is a small to medium deciduous tree reaching heights of 50 feet. The leaves are in opposite pairs, glossy dark green above, paler below, usually with three lobes. The flowers produced in spring are yellow-green. The fruit is a samara with two winged seeds. The leaves are yellow, red, and orange in the fall.The bark of the tree is shaggy.
