Green Ash is a medium to large bottomland tree that seldom matures larger than 60 feet in height.  The tree can often be identified by the presence of large buds sitting on top of the leaf stem junction.  When leaves are missing, the Green Ash can still be identified by the flat-topped leaf scar with a bud sitting just above it.  The silver-gray bark pattern is quite variable, from diamond-shaped, laced pattern with narrow, winding, flat-topped ridges and scalloped valleys to an alligator-back pattern square of square, flat-topped plates that are separated by deep cracks.  Leaves are opposite, compound, blue green in color, and 8 –12 inches long.
